St. Thomas Aquinas Classical Academy was started with a simple goal in mind: to educate our children for eternity by enriching the study of our world with the teachings and love of Holy Mother Church as explained by St. Thomas Aquinas. By offering both an academy and a homeschool program, we hope to offer a community of Socratic and Thomistic learning for traditional Catholics in Toledo!
Classical education is a model of education which derives its structure and purpose from the seven liberal arts of ancient education (the Trivium and the Quadrivium), and includes the Western Canons of classical literature, the fine arts, the study of Latin and Greek, and the history and philosphy of ancient and Western civilization.
Susan Wise describes classical education as a model of learning which is "language-focused, meaning that learning is accomplished through words, both written and spoken, rather than through images (pictures, videos, television)." This distinction is important because it requires very different habits of thought, primarily in the virtue of the intellect. The study of the liberal arts requires the intellect to be an active, rather than passive, participant in the pursuit and understanding of truth, which provides not only knowledge but the ability to apply that knowledge in the understanding of other realities.
While the study of the classics is important, if a balance in their instruction and their practice is not present, the fruits of such an education cannot be fully realized. At St. Thomas Aquinas Classical Academy, we strive for this balance so that we may attend to the proper formation and ordering of each student's soul, disposing him/her to become a good citizen of both Heaven and earth.
Our Mission
To educate our children for Eternity by developing and forming our students in the classical liberal arts and sciences through a rigorous and richly Catholic curriculum to comprehend Truth; to appreciate, love, and reproduce the Beautiful; and to strengthen their wills to pursue the Good through virtuous action.
Our Vision
To restore our culture by forming our students to become holy disciples and witnesses of our Holy Catholic Faith, in the pursuit of charity and justice for our world, by developing strong language and reasoning skills, an understanding of God’s creation and of His Natural Laws, and an appreciation and preservation of the rich inheritance of Western Civilization
